When writing a new email in Outlook and you also use Microsoft Communicator, Outlook can display the current status in real time of the people you are writing to.

If Outlook is not displaying the status like it should, check the following option:

Outlook 2007:

  • Tools
  • Options
  • Other tab
  • Check the box next to “Display online status next to a person name”

Outlook 2010:

  • File
  • Options
  • Contacts
  • Check the box next to “Display online status next to name”

Any idea what to do if it is working for everyone’s online status except my own?

Try rebuilding your Outlook’s .OST file to force it to communicate with the server again.
    Close Outlook
    Go to your user folder
Click on AppData, Local, Microsoft, then Outlook. Rename any files that end in .OST to end in .OLD.
Open Outlook and have it rebuild your online cache.

I read this paragraph completely regarding the comparison of most recent and previous technologies, it’s awesome article.

    Hi Tim,
I rebuilt my OST file. I works partially – now only the status of sender is displayed, but not of the others, including mine. Any clue?

Oh, yes, the status in CC and To shows up when mouse is hovering on the names. But can I have them showed up without mouse?

What does the below line mean
Rename any files that end in .OST to end in .OLD.

  7. Tim

The .OST file keeps track of all your online emails so that Outlook doesn’t have to update everything when ever you open Outlook.
Sometime it becomes corrupt. Renaming it and allowing it to rebuild can fix many problems in Outlook.

I tried these steps but didnt work. Outlook doesnt show the Communicator status of the contacts.. My machine is a 64bit.. Could it be becoz of that?

    I use Outlook 2010 ( V14.0.6123.5001) (32-bit) and communicator v3.5.6907.261 ( 2007 R2)

Try rebuilding the OST file for Outlook to have it force a connection back with the server.

yes the above trouble shooting should be working but if still the issue persists then create a new profile of mailbox in out look and check it once if still no change then reinstall the communicator and later repair the office

Hi I am using Office 2013 and 2007 Office communication, i dont see people online beside their names in outlook

I have the option of selecting ‘display online status’ but the option below that ‘display online status in to & cc fields only when mouse rests on name’ is greyed out…? I recently had an upgrade to Win 7.. prior to that, I could see the status next to the name, no resting w/pointer needed.

Thanks Rahool, for the link provided. it worked for me after I removed the Lync from the IM providers.

Hi Tim, the option was greyed, how to enable “Display online status next to name”, thanks.

  16. Tim

If the option is greyed out, then you need to contact your Exchange admin. They will need to turn that feature on in the server.
